NEW PUPPY CARE TIPS
* Keep
toilet lids down. Puppies may play in or drink the water. They could be hurt by
the lid closing on them or by ingesting
toilet cleaners.
* Cut six-pack beverage holders apart before discarding.
Puppies can become entangled in them and they pose a serious choking
hazard.
* Unplug, remove or cover any electrical cords in your puppy's
confinement area. This will prevent him from chewing on them.
* Do not use an
electric blanket or heating pad to line your puppy's bed. This could cause
serious burns.
* Keep all medications-prescriptions and
over-the-counter medications-out of your puppy's reach.
NEVER give your puppy
ANY medication without checking with your veterinarian first.
* Make it a
habit to "Puppy Check" before closing doors or leaving home to make sure your
puppy has not been accidentally
locked in an unsafe area.
* Keep sewing
supplies and small hardware out of puppy's reach.
Buttons, beads, needles, pins,
nails, staples, screws, etc., can hurt your puppy's mouth and cause internal
injuries if he swallows them.
* Do not put ribbons around your puppy's neck.
While it may look cute, it can catch on something and choke him.
* Make sure
all candy, alcohol and chocolate are out of puppy's reach.
* Keep antifreeze
out of your puppy's reach. Try to deter your puppy from drinking out of puddles
in the street or on the sidewalks
as they may contain pesticides, chemicals or
other harmful materials.
If your
puppy eats one of these poisonous plants, call your veterinarian immediately as
well as Poison Control. (Keep the phone number for your state's poison control
center in a handy place.)

After
puppy proofing, introduce your new pet to his home by confining him to one room
first-ideally, the room where he will be sleeping. Give him 20-30 minutes to
explore on his own. Then join him and show him his crate, his toys, his food
bowl and his water bowl. Speak quietly to your pup, sit close by him and pet and
stroke him. Your puppy will soon know which special corner of the house belongs
to him. Respect his right to be undisturbed while he is resting, sleeping or
eating.
Remember, your puppy looks to you for direction, comfort and protection. Everything and everyone is new to him, so don't let him down!
